Regional Area Writing Projects

Last week, I began work as a fellow of a regional Area Writing Project. As a teacher, I will be learning how to use writing more effectively in my classroom, and teaching others what I have learned in using writing in my science classroom. I began experimenting this week, using a Power Write — a 5 minute word “spill” — to get students thinking about a topic. The topic was Fungus. The results were exciting! 

Students of all ages wrote about fungus. Then they dissected fungus, observed it, drew it, put it under the microscope to view more closely. Then we watched a video about some virulent fungi that attack insects. Then students wrote again — adding to what they knew and reflecting on what they had learned. 

I’m looking forward to learning new techniques for teaching writing to students!
