Tribute to an Amazing Mentor

Teaching is humbling, like juggling on a unicycle in front of a large crowd. It is humbling, tumbling, tripping over your own emotions while you try to keep your heart open in the presence of a large group of people, offering up a vision of the world, a scrap of wonder, a chance to rub elbows with knowledge, riding the unicycle of time that never stops moving. Some teachers ride with grace. Others among us — like me — tumble off again and again, over time getting a little better at balancing it all. Those of us who fall need mentors to help  us get back on the unicycle and try again in our wobbly way.

Zoltan Sarda, a wonderful teacher and mentor, is about to move out of the classroom and into a life of training young teachers. Both of my children experienced the magic of his classroom in kindergarten and first grade, and I will always be grateful to his presence in their early schooling, as well as the insight he has offered into my own teaching process over the years. I really wanted to write a tribute to Zoltan and all I learned from him, but I realized I already did.  In 2004 I wrote an article about his classroom and school for Vision Magazine.  After re-reading it, I realized there is no better tribute I can give to him, other than to just say Thank you, Zoltan.
