Setting up a Garden for Learning

I’m setting up a new class, at a new school. 

It’s exciting — all that possibility in the cardboard boxes of Ikea furniture, used books, oak tag board, empty walls and open corners. The possibilities are endless. 

Where should I put a cozy corner? 

What about a corner for calming down?

A space for experimenting, building, engineering?

A space to think with numbers and words?

A space to gather in a circle with our friends?

It’s architecture and sociology, motion science and group dynamics. It’s setting up a space for learning, counseling, collaborating, meditating, ruminating, philosophizing, considering, creating, negotiating, numerating, composing and publishing.

An empty classroom is like a garden with seeds planted, waiting for the sprouts to pop their heads out. You only hope you’ve planted things in the right spots so that everyone has room to grow.
